The laguna de Oviedo is the largest lagoon in the Dominican Republic and has a level of salty water three times higher than the sea. Its more than 10 kilometers in length are surrounded by dense mangroves and dotted by 24 keys where you can see white, royal and blue herons, western shorebirds, seagulls, roseate spoonbills, pelicans, parrots, and beautiful American flamingos. Excursions of one to three hours to the Oviedo Lagoon can be booked through the information center of the Ministry of the Environment, located off the main road in Oviedo. Due to the high temperatures, the best time to appreciate the wildlife in the lagoon is during the early hours of the morning
The Oviedo lagoon is very famous for the groups of flamingos that visit it annually from various countries in the region. This elongated 28 km2 lagoon also contains a series of islets or rocky cays where numerous birds nest and the rhinoceros iguana inhabits. It even has an endemic (unique) species of fish, the Oviedo titaco (Cyprinodon nicholsi).
